MX4 Rail Replacement Set – Original BAK Industries Parts
Our MX4 rail replacement set restores your tonneau cover to factory specifications when rails wear, crack, or sustain damage. This set includes both driver and passenger side aluminum rails engineered to match the original hardware on every MX4 model.
Each rail ships with pre-drilled mounting holes aligned to your truck bed's stake pockets, so installation takes less than an hour with basic hand tools. We machine these rails from the same 6061-T6 aluminum used in new MX4 production, guaranteeing a precise fit whether your cover is six months or six years old.
Replacing worn rails eliminates cover sag, restores water-tight sealing, and extends the life of your tonneau. If your MX4 fabric is intact but the rails show stress cracks, corrosion, or stripped hardware, this set is the most cost-effective path back to like-new performance.
What's included in the MX4 rail set

Materials & construction
We extrude each rail from 6061-T6 aluminum, the aerospace-grade alloy specified for every BAK cover frame since 2001. This alloy delivers tensile strength above 42,000 psi while weighing 60 percent less than equivalent steel.
The powder coat finish is electrostatically applied in a three-stage process — degreasing, conversion coating, then a 400-degree cure cycle. That layered approach bonds the finish at a molecular level, so it won’t flake when you drag cargo across the rails or park in full desert sun. We test every batch to ASTM B117 salt-spray standards, the same protocol used for marine hardware.

Installation & fit
Installation mirrors the process you’d follow with a brand-new MX4. Remove the existing cover fabric from the old rails, unbolt the four clamps securing each rail to the bed, lift the rails out, then drop the new rails into the stake pockets and torque the clamps to 15 ft-lbs.
We include stainless-steel carriage bolts, lock nuts, and weather-resistant washers in the kit, so you don’t need to reuse corroded hardware from the original rails. Each rail arrives with rubber edge trim already installed — the same EPDM extrusion that seals the cover perimeter on new production units.
When to replace rails
Inspect rails twice a year for hairline cracks near the clamp mounts, especially if you routinely haul loads above 300 pounds. Aluminum fatigues under cyclic stress, and a crack shorter than your thumbnail can propagate to a full rail split in under six months.
Corrosion shows up as white powder or pitting on the rail’s underside where road spray collects. Surface oxidation is cosmetic, but if you see pitting deeper than 0.5 millimeters, the rail’s load capacity is compromised. We’ve seen rails corrode through in coastal zones or snow-belt states after five winters of daily exposure.

Common questions about the MX4 rail set
Yes, as long as the liner didn't cover or relocate your stake pockets. Most spray-in liners are applied around the pockets, leaving them accessible. Measure from the front stake pocket to the rear on each side — if both measurements match your bed's nominal length, the rails will fit.
If your liner installer filled or shifted the pockets, you'll need to drill new mounting holes. Contact us with photos of your bed before ordering, and we can confirm compatibility.
The kit includes all necessary stainless-steel hardware, but you can reuse your original clamps if they're undamaged. Inspect each clamp for cracks, stripped threads, or corrosion. If the threads turn smoothly and the clamp body shows no fractures, it's safe to reuse.
We recommend replacing hardware that's been on the truck for more than five years, especially in salt-heavy climates. Corroded fasteners can seize during installation and damage the new rails.
In typical use — daily driving, moderate cargo loads, annual cleaning — the rails should last eight to twelve years. Heavy commercial use, frequent overloading, or coastal exposure can shorten that to five years.
Aluminum doesn't rust, but it does fatigue under cyclic stress. If you regularly haul plywood, appliances, or ATVs, inspect the rails every six months for hairline cracks. Catching a crack early lets you replace rails before they fail and damage the cover fabric.
You'll remove the fabric panels from the old rails, but you don't need to disassemble the hinge system. Unfold the cover completely, detach the Velcro or snap fasteners securing fabric to rails, then unbolt the four clamps on each rail.
Once the old rails are out, drop the new rails into the stake pockets, reattach the clamps, and re-secure the fabric. The whole process takes forty-five to sixty minutes if you work alone, less if you have a helper to hold the fabric taut while you fasten it.
Yes, as long as your toolbox or extender doesn't block the stake pockets. Most low-profile toolboxes sit against the cab and clear the front rail by several inches. Bed extenders typically mount inboard of the rail path.
If you run a tall crossover toolbox that spans the full bed width, measure the clearance between the box and the stake pockets. You need at least one inch of clearance for the rail clamps to seat properly.
Replacement rails carry the same limited warranty as new MX4 covers — three years against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty covers cracking, delamination, and finish failure under normal use.
Damage from accidents, misuse, or unauthorized modification isn't covered. Keep your purchase receipt and installation photos in case you need to file a claim. We handle warranty requests directly — no need to go through a dealer.
Rails are sold as a matched pair to ensure symmetrical fit and finish. Mixing a new rail with a six-year-old rail can create uneven tension on the cover fabric, leading to premature wear.
If budget is a concern, replacing both rails now prevents a second installation job six months later when the older rail fails. Labor cost and downtime typically exceed the price difference between a single rail and a full set.
