BAKFlip F1 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover

★★★★★4.8· thousands of reviews

We built the BAKFlip F1 for drivers who need maximum bed protection without sacrificing full bed access. This hard folding cover uses aircraft-grade aluminum panels finished with a smooth matte coating that resists fading and UV damage better than standard textured finishes.

The F1 folds completely open in seconds, stacking panels against the cab to give you 100% bed access when you're loading tall cargo. Patented aluminum hinge design delivers a 300-pound distributed weight capacity, so you can safely load gear on top when the cover is closed. Our exclusive sealed ball-bearing hinge system keeps panels moving smoothly through thousands of open-close cycles.

Every F1 ships with the RAM mounting system pre-installed on aluminum panels—no drilling into your truck bed required. Clamp-on rail design means installation takes about an hour with basic hand tools, and the cover lifts off completely in under a minute if you need to haul something that won't fit underneath.

Aluminum Construction & Finish Details

The F1 uses the same extruded aluminum panel construction we spec for our entire hard folding lineup, but pairs it with a smooth matte finish instead of the textured powder coat found on models like the BAKFlip MX4. That finish choice matters for two reasons: the matte surface sheds water faster during rain, and the tighter molecular bond in the coating layer resists UV breakdown in high-sun climates.

Each panel measures 0.375 inches thick and ships pre-assembled to hinge rails. The aluminum alloy is the same 5000-series grade used in marine applications—it won’t rust, and surface scratches don’t expose bare metal that corrodes over time. Panel edges seal with EPDM rubber gaskets that compress against your bed rails to block dust and moisture.

Installation & Mounting System
Sizing & fit

Installation & Mounting System

The F1 ships with our RAM rail system already attached to the underside of aluminum panels. You clamp the side rails onto your truck’s bed rails using adjustable brackets—no holes drilled into the bed itself. The entire installation process takes 45-60 minutes for most drivers working alone with a socket wrench and an Allen key.

Rail clamps use spring-loaded tension adjusters that let you fine-tune how tightly the cover sits against your bed. Tighter settings improve the weather seal; looser settings make it easier to remove the cover when you need the bed completely open. Once rails are positioned, you drop the folded cover assembly onto the mounting rails and secure it with four quick-release knobs.

Styling

Folding Operation & Bed Access

You open the F1 by releasing the rear slam latch and folding panels forward toward the cab. Each panel folds on top of the previous one, stacking the entire assembly against the back of your cab window. When fully open, you get 100% bed access from the tailgate to within six inches of the cab wall—the folded stack sits low enough that it doesn’t block your rear window view.

The hinge system uses a friction-lock design that holds panels in any partially open position. If you only need to access part of the bed, fold back one or two panels and they’ll stay put without additional latching. The sealed ball bearings keep the hinges moving smoothly even after you’ve driven through rain, snow, or dusty job sites.

Perfect fit on my 2022 Silverado short bed
I installed this myself in about 50 minutes—clamps lined up perfectly with my bed rails and the panels fold smooth every time. The matte finish looks clean and hasn't shown any fading after six months parked outside in Arizona sun.

Way easier to remove than my old cover
I haul kayaks a few times a month and need to pull the cover off completely. The four-knob system makes removal so much faster than bolt-on covers I've used before. Takes me less than a minute to lift it off and set it in the garage.

Holds up great in Michigan winters
I was worried about the hinges freezing, but this thing opens just as easily at 10°F as it does in summer. I've had it through two winters now and the seals are still tight—no snow or ice getting into the bed.

Love the smooth finish over textured
I had a textured powder coat cover on my last truck and it always held onto dirt. This matte finish wipes clean in seconds and water sheets right off after rain. Looks sharper too in my opinion.

300 lb rating is legit—tested it myself
I've loaded two full-size dirt bikes on top of the closed cover for short drives to the track. Cover doesn't flex or creak, and the panels still fold perfectly after doing this a dozen times. Super solid build.

Installation was straightforward even for a beginner
I'm not mechanically inclined and I got this installed by myself in about an hour following the included instructions. The rail clamps are genius—I didn't have to drill anything or worry about measuring perfectly. Works great.

Good to know

Common Questions About the BAKFlip F1

Yes—the friction-lock hinges hold panels in any position, so you can fold back one or two panels and drive safely at highway speeds. The remaining closed panels stay latched and won't flap or shift during normal driving.

We recommend folding all panels closed or all the way open for extended highway driving to reduce wind resistance and improve fuel economy.

The F1 is compatible with most spray-in bedliners including Line-X, Rhino Linings, and Speedliner. The clamp-on rail system adjusts to accommodate the added thickness of spray-applied coatings on your bed rail caps.

If your liner extends more than 0.5 inches above the factory bed rail surface, contact our fitment team before ordering to confirm clearance for the mounting clamps.

The matte finish on the bakflip f1 is smooth to the touch and sheds water faster than the textured powder coat used on our G2 and MX4 models. It also resists UV fading and surface chalking more effectively in high-sun climates.

Both finishes are durable, but drivers in desert or coastal regions typically see better long-term appearance retention with the F1's matte coating.

The standard F1 does not include integrated rack rails. If you need cargo rack mounting capability, our BAKFlip CS/F1 model uses the same aluminum panel construction as the F1 but adds factory-installed rack rails on top of the cover.

You cannot retrofit rack rails onto a standard F1 after purchase—the CS/F1 is a separate product designed from the start for rack compatibility.

Minimal maintenance is needed. We recommend rinsing the cover with water every few weeks to remove road salt, dust, and debris that can accumulate in the hinge channels.

Once or twice a year, apply a silicone-based lubricant to the hinge pins and latch mechanism to keep everything moving smoothly. Avoid using petroleum-based sprays, as they can degrade the EPDM rubber seals over time.

The F1 works with most OEM tailgate steps that fold up flush with the tailgate when not in use. Bed extenders that sit inside the bed when closed typically do not interfere with cover operation, but you may need to remove the extender before fully closing the rear panel.

Aftermarket tailgate replacements or extenders that change tailgate height may affect fitment—measure the gap between your closed tailgate and bed rails, then contact our support team to verify compatibility.

When fully open and folded flat against the cab, the F1 leaves approximately six inches of bed space occupied by the stacked panels. The folded assembly sits low enough that it does not obstruct your rear window view from the driver's seat.

This design gives you full bed access for tall cargo while keeping the cover attached and ready to close in seconds when you're done loading.
